Flow

In reflecting on my own experiences, I've encountered numerous flow moments of profound joy. I feel so engaging in strategic conquests within gaming dungeons, thinking intricate mathematical theorem proofs , and crafting intricate novels that span tens of thousands of words have all been sources of immense satisfaction. Even when I playing randomly on the piano, improvisation took the lead, with no predefined sheet music guiding my fingers. As I articulate these diverse pursuits, I realize something underlying my flow — confidence. Across all these realms, mathematics, music, literature, and gaming, I've consistently approached challenges with a belief in my ability to overcome them, even some with some failure. This self-assurance is complemented by my commitment to acquiring skills. If faced with a difficulty, my instinct is to turn to online resources, arming myself with the knowledge needed to fulfill my creative aspirations, rarely just say 'I cannot make it'.

From my personal journey, I recognize the importance of instilling a similar confidence in my math classroom, since I heard many said that 'I cannot do math, I can never make it'. To create an environment conducive to student success, I envision a space where learners feel assured in their abilities, unafraid to pose questions, unfazed by the prospect of failure, and driven to persist. I want my classroom to be a realm where students' curiosity is nurtured, skills are honed, and every student knows they have a secure foundation to explore the complexities of mathematical understanding.

  2. Hi You, your reflections beautifully capture the essence of finding flow through confidence and a commitment to skill acquisition across various domains. Creating a classroom environment that fosters similar confidence in mathematical abilities, encourages curiosity, and embraces the learning journey seems like an invaluable aspiration. I am thinking, how might educators consistently nurture this mindset of resilience and confidence in their students, helping them navigate challenges and persist in their mathematical explorations?
